Elementary Science through Archaeology

In a partnership with Maury Elementary School in Washington, DC, Archaeology in the Community introduced nearly 70 fourth-grade students to archaeology over the course of a semester. With a professional archaeologist, students mended broken pottery, analyzed local historic photos, and created 3D models with LiDAR. AITC also provided the school with materials for two more lessons: garbology (studying modern trash) and playing the ancient Egyptian board game Senet. The number of students who could successfully define archaeology jumped from 10% at the start of the semester to 75%! Extended educational partnerships like these with DC Public Schools allow AITC to build young learners’ scientific reasoning and introduce them to new technologies and career pathways.
