Archaeologist for a Day

In a one-off program, an archaeologist will conduct an in-person, hands-on workshop. These programs are tailored to best engage with the age group and meet your goals. We lead activities that introduce learners to archaeology, scientific reasoning, and historical literacy.

Virtual Classroom Visit

Request a professional archaeologist for a virtual visit with students anywhere you are located. The format can be adjusted based on your needs, but this is often a student-led discussion and Q&A.

Extended Partnerships

For deeper learning, we can design multi-week experiences. This is often helpful for an after school program or in-class unit where learners can build on their knowledge over time and develop a longer-term project.

Who are your educational programs for?

Everyone! We believe in making archaeology accessible and relevant for any community of learners. While K-12 education is usually where we’ve found the greatest needs for our services, we also work with universities, adult interest groups, and senior living homes.

What are the costs?

One-off, in-person archaeology programs for public schools in the Washington, DC metro area are free. For extended programs with multiple sessions, there is a fee to cover costs. For other types of institutions (private schools, scouting groups, homeschoolers, libraries, etc.), there is a sliding scale fee that typically amounts to $200-500 per program. Costs are dependent on time, size of group, materials, travel, customization, and your budget.

Virtual classrooms visits for a Q&A session with an archaeologist are free. Virtual visits that involve mailing hands-on activity materials for students to complete will need to cover costs.

We want archaeology to be as accessible as possible. Let us know your needs, and we can discuss what we can offer within your budget.

What subjects can your programs connect to?

Archaeology is interdisciplinary, connecting to all different subjects. Lessons can emphasize skills in science, history, art, math, literacy, technology, and more. For schools and homeschooling groups, we can align lessons to state or other curriculum standards. For scouting groups, we can match programs to badge requirements.

What are some example programs?

An introductory lecture to archaeology and archaeological careers
Solving an archaeological mystery, working through the steps of the scientific method while using mapping skills and coordinate systems
Documenting rock art and other features through drawing or 3D scanning (LiDAR)
Identifying seeds and plants in the past or telling time using tree rings
Putting together pieces of broken pottery or crafting pottery
Understanding probabilities through ancient board games
Making reasoned judgements about documents, like local historic photographs
Building media literacy skills with examples of pseudoscience on the Internet
Analyzing modern trash to understand how archaeologists study artifacts
Calculating average distances while throwing spears with atl-atls (ancient hunting tools)
Sorting artifacts into categories based on physical characteristics
Story time with an age-appropriate, archaeology-related book
